TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Now that your Thanksgiving plate is clean, hope you saved some leftovers. We're not talking food, we're talking trash. All of that grease left behind from all the cooking.

The day after Thanksgiving is considered Black Friday for the plumbing industry as well. Clogged drains will be big business. It is the busiest day for plumbers, who say, too many people are treating their kitchen sinks like a trash can.

Charles Zimmerman with Al Coronado Plumbing responded to half a dozen calls for service on Thanksgiving day. He expects Friday to be a lot busier.

Zimmerman said too many people were pouring turkey grease after deep frying their turkeys down the drain. That, along with turkey skin, and vegetable peelings were enough to lead to big backups that required emergency service.

The cost to clean out the big lumps of grease from a drain pipe can range from $300 to $20,000, if the back up ends up in pipes under the foundation of your home.

There is a much better alternative to get rid of that grease.

Colleen Crowninshield the manager of the Clean Cities Coalition urged residents to pour it into empty coffee cans, jars or milk cartons and bring it to a local collection site on Friday.

"We can put it to use. We make a bio diesel out of it. It's an eight hour process, and it can be used in any diesel engine with no retrofits needed to that engine," said Crowninshield.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, in four locations in Tucson and one in Sahuarita.

The Tucson Fire Department will be there with a fire truck and crew to help with the grease pour. Staff are also urging residents to bring an unwrapped toy for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

The Toys for Tots will also be set up at O'Rielly Chevrolet and the City of Tucson Water Plant No. 2 location.

More than 21,600 pounds of grease have been collected since the event began in 2005.
