New federal trial dates set for DMR corruption suspects

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

New trial dates have been set for the five people named in the federal public-corruption cases involving the Department of Marine Resources.

According to Judge Keith Starrett's office, June 2, 2014 is now the trial date for former DMR executive director Bill Walker, and his son, Scott Walker. Also being tried June 2 will be former DMR chief of staff Joe Ziegler and former DMR planning director Tina Shumate.

Scott Walker and former D'Iberville City Manager Michael Janus will be tried March 10, 2014.

The trial date for all five was set for December 16th, but defense attorneys asked for more time to prepare. The charges include conspiracy, fraud, bribery and money laundering.

Three other former DMR employees face state charges of fraud and embezzlement related to their employment.
