Ole Miss moving forward with plans to build a new state of the art basketball arena

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Construction on the largest project in Ole Miss history is ready to begin. The new basketball arena is slated to seat approximately 9,500 fans and will be located on the west side of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Included in the construction will be a five-story parking garage with 800 spaces that will be built on the south end of the arena.

Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones said,"This arena is going to be great for the university broadly." We will have students graduating in that facility and we will have the opportunity to be entertained in that facility. "It's going to be much larger than just providing a great place for us to play basketball. It's another symbol of excellence for our university. We'll move from having the worst arena in our conference to having the state of the art arena that everybody's going to want to emulate. It's great for the university."

Construction should begin in the spring of 2014 and the goal is to open the new arena no later than January 2016, just in time for conference action.
