NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Some celebrity chefs came together Tuesday to help the Nashville Rescue Mission begin preparing for its Thanksgiving meals.

The wet weather couldn't spoil the annual Mission Possible Turkey Fry, which began eight years ago when country musician Tracy Lawrence helped fry 50 turkeys.

On Tuesday, 500 turkeys went into the deep fryers with the help of some NFL players, country music stars and about 150 volunteers from the community.

"It's just a great day of fellowship and giving back. I really do enjoy it a lot," Lawrence said.

The day actually started around 5 a.m. with an assembly line in the kitchen at the Rescue Mission cleaning and seasoning the birds. It's an all day job.

"Lifting turkeys up in the oil and putting all of that stuff up in the end, too," said volunteer and U.S. Coast Guardsman Chris Snyder.

And under Lawrence's supervision, the birds turned out golden and juicy.

"The cooking tip about turkeys is: make sure they are completely thawed out. If you drop a frozen turkey in, they will explode," Lawrence said.

Fortunately, there were no problems Tuesday, and the Rescue Mission will be ready to feed the 1,500 people expected for Thanksgiving dinner.

"They're smiles and they're happy. It gets a full belly and a warm body. And it's nice to do that. The mission is very important for the men who come here. Without it, they'd be here on the streets in the cold," said Rocky Peay, with the Nashville Rescue Mission.
