Eric Law sentenced for sexual battery of 15-year-old girl

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Tuesday afternoon in a Madison Circuit Court, former WLBT Meteorologist Eric Law pled guilty and was sentenced on a charge of sexual battery.

He was sentenced to serve 8 years in prison. The judge suspended 12 years as part of a plea agreement.

He will also have 5 years probation and will have to register as a sex offender for life.

Law's attorney says, "What you saw today is who Eric is and that is someone who acknowledges that he made a mistake and will stand up and take responsibility. He could have put the family through a trial if he wanted to but he did not want to do that and I think Kristina being here today is a testament to their relationship, and the kind of person Kristina knows Eric to be."

Law's wife Kristina addressed the media afterwards saying that she didn't feel the sentence was fair.

"We lost his career, we lost our home, we lost most of the people we knew and loved and prison is just one more loss," said Kristina.

She said Eric wanted to do the right thing, rather than drag the victims family through a trial.

Madison/Rankin county District Attorney Michael Guest said leaving court, "This sentence is not only what we wanted, but more importantly what the family wanted to see, that justice was served in the eyes of the victim's family in this case."

The incident involving a 15 year occurred in Laws home.

Two "gratification of lust" charges and one "sexual battery" charge were dropped as part of the Law's plea agreement.
