ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

This week marks one year since someone murdered a woman in her Athens apartment complex.

No arrests have been made after Sharon Wellington was found stabbed to death.

Chief Floyd Johnson agreed that the case isn't as hot as it was last November, but he still hopes that reminding people what happened could lead to new information and a crack in the case. That's something her friends and loved ones are desperately praying for.

"It's been weird," said Sharon's friend, Genary Hicks.  "It's been odd and it's taken a lot of getting used to. I don't think all of us are use to it."

Police said someone stabbed the 32-year-old to death in her apartment last November.

"Sharon's friends still love her and miss her," said Hicks.  "Her family still misses her. So many people, no one has forgotten.  It's almost like it was yesterday for a lot of us."

Athens police said they haven't forgotten either.  Wellington's murder is the only open and active murder investigation they have. It's a case Chief Floyd Johnson said he wouldn't label as a cold case.

"I think there is information that is still out there that we'll be getting," he said.  "I think there's a few thing that we have active now, I won't get into that but things that we are doing to try to develop the case further."

Johnson said they've had leads and persons of interest in the past year, but nothing more. He still remains optimistic for a crack in the open case.

"We are always hoping to solve a case as soon as you can after an incident," he said. "I still believe we will be able to solve this case."

Hicks said she's happy to hear that the authorities haven't filed her friend's case away.  She said all she wants is justice.

"I just hope that people will not forget about her and her life because it mattered to us."

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
