MDOT prepping for possible wintry weather

Posted: Updated:
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

With the possibility of wintry type weather in the Pine Belt later this week later this week the Mississippi Department of Transportation is taking the necessary steps to keep the roadways safe.

The northern portion of the state received some mixed precipitation on Monday. The forecast for the Pine Belt says the best chance will be Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. MDOT crews will be out patrolling the roads looking for ice accumulation on the interstates and highways. Motorists are being advised to drive slowly and use extreme caution when traveling on roads affected by winter weather.

"If we are experiencing wintry weather conditions the best thing is not travel if you don't have to," said Cape Jones, MDOT District Maintenance Engineer. "Stay off the roads, if not slow down and really be aware of surroundings and just drive cautiously."

MDOT is encouraging to contact local law enforcement if they encounter icy conditions.
