Mississippi State keeps bowl hopes alive with win over Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Damian Williams scored on a 25-yard touchdown run on the first play of overtime, and the Mississippi State defense made it stand, as the Bulldogs defeated Arkansas 24-17 on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.

On Arkansas' overtime possession, Mississippi State (5-6, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) got an interception by Taveze Calhoun on fourth down to seal the victory and keep its bowl hopes alive.

Arkansas (0-7, 3-8) led 10-0 in the first half, but was unable to hold on to a late lead and lost its eighth consecutive game for the first time in school history. The Razorbacks took a 17-10 lead on a 22-yard run by Julian Horton in the third quarter.

Tyler Russell drew the Bulldogs even on a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Jameon Lewis. Mississippi State had a chance to win in regulation, but Devon Bell's 42-yard field goal drifted wide right with 24 seconds remaining.
