Nashville church purchases food for elementary students' families

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville church is making a huge difference in the lives of area families. The group has partnered with a Metro school to make sure the kids never go hungry, and this isn't a one-time thing.

A group of volunteers from Oasis Church went from classroom to classroom at Carter Lawrence Elementary School, delivering bags packed with vegetables, cereal, meat and pasta.

"On the back of their shirts it says 'Because people matter,' and they have definitely demonstrated that people matter," said Carter Lawrence principal Dr. Karen Hamilton.

There are more than 400 students at Carter Lawrence Elementary, and 93 percent of the student population relies on a free or reduced lunch.

Each one gets a bag.

"We use it for dinner," said Ivie Obeto, a third grader at Carter Lawrence.

But the church doesn't give to Carter Lawrence once a year or just for the holidays. The giving happens every single month.

"I just don't know how they get all the food for over 400 kids," Ivie said.

Second Harvest Food Bank and Kroger help by providing food to the church wholesale, and Oasis spends it's offering dollars to buy it up.

"It is absolutely wonderful," Hamilton said.

The church even gives out the bags to families during the summer, and the plan is to give more.

"We want to increase to more schools beyond Carter Lawrence, and as resources come in, we'll be faithful to do that," said the Rev. Jennifer Ranson, outreach pastor at Oasis Church.

They've kept the food coming for one year, and while a thank-you isn't expected, at Carter Lawrence, it comes from hundreds of kids.

"We know that words cannot express how much we appreciate what they are doing for our students," Hamilton said.
