BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - The safety lockdown at South Hancock Elementary School has ended and children are being dismissed from class on time.
The school went on a precautionary lockdown at 1:35 p.m. Friday, after receiving an alert from the St. Bernard Parish Louisiana Sheriff's Department that someone may have been in pursuit of the parent of two students at South Hancock Elementary School.
Assistant Superintendent Donnie Gholston told WLOX News Hancock County sheriff's deputies responded to the school and to a home in a nearby neighborhood.
Once authorities determined the potential threat was over, Gholston said students were dismissed to busses on schedule. As an extra measure of security, Gholston said, "all children will be delivered door-to-door, which is our inclement weather procedure."
The lockdown caused some concern for parents arriving early to pick up their children. Gholston said the district will use its phone alert system to explain the emergency and steps taken to ensure the safety of their children.
