Eric Law to plead guilty to sexual battery

Posted: Updated:
MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

"Whether somebody thinks he deserves it or not, the fact of the matter is, Eric has lost tremendously. He's lost his career that he loved. He's lost personal respect, professional respect," says Flowood attorney Matt Baldridge, who represents former WLBT/WDBD Meteorologist Eric Law.

In March, Law was charged with two counts each of sexual battery and gratification of lust. The victim is a 15-year-old girl.

Law has not been living in Mississippi. Baldridge says he had little privacy and couldn't find work.

Our news crews have obtained a court petition that reveals Law will plead guilty to one count of sexual battery. If the judge accepts the plea, Law will not be able to avoid some prison time. If the plea is rejected and Law goes to trial, he faces up to 90 years behind bars.

"I agree with (Law's) decision because there's so much at stake," Baldridge says. "Eric honestly did not want to drag the young lady through the media spectacle that a trial in this case would be.

"Frankly, I thought we had some pretty good evidence for challenges that we could have raised," the attorney explains. "Example, there are a lot of Facebook records. After thoroughly looking at all the evidence, it was apparent her account had been logged into by just about everyone in her family."

Baldridge says law's wife, Kristina, has stuck by his side.

"I think Kristina, I don't think, I know, she knows Eric is a good person. He put himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and made wrong decisions. Eric is not a child predator. (He) will stand in front of a judge and own up to what he did do," Baldridge explains.

The petition includes an acknowledgement that Law will have to register as a sex offender.
