TPS announces plans for 2 new football stadiums

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The high school football and track teams of both Woodward and Scott have had to host their games at other TPS schools, but starting next year, they'll each have their own place to call home.

The Ohio School Facilities Commission approved a recommendation Wednesday evening to go ahead with construction of two new stadiums for each school.  Rudolph-Libbe has been named as the contractor.

"We've utilized our other schools because they have the facilities." said Board of Education member and Chair of the Ohio School Facilities Commission, Lisa Sobecki. "We just had to work around and schedule around for the last couple of years for them."

When Toledo voters approved a ballot issue in the early 2000's, it allowed for the district to build 44 new schools.  As part of the that, $1.1 million was set aside for upgrading each high school stadium.

Scott and Woodward's stadiums are the last two projects from that ballot issue.

"You don't see high schools without facilities, athletic facilities on the outside," said Sobecki.  "I know the schools are excited, I know the communities are excited, I know the students are excited."

The next step in the process is for the school board to approve the measure, followed by community meetings to discuss what residents want in the stadium.  Any additions pushing the cost over $1.1 million will be paid for with fundraising from booster and alumni groups.

"It's the community's project." said Sobecki. "So, when you have the community buy in and that community loyalty, then you have that community appreciation and we've seen that success through all of our buildings that we've built because put that community input in."
