Broome's Marketplace back in business

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Broome's grocery is open again in Ocean Springs. The store, now known as Broome's Marketplace, had a soft opening Friday morning.

It was 1961 when the late Curmis Broome first opened the doors at the same location in the city. It remains to this day, something you don't see much of anymore. The Broome family has owned and operated this store since the very first day.

Curmis' son, Buddy has been here since he was 7-years-old.

"I still feel mom and dad's presence, they are everywhere. I was 7-years-old, and this was more home to me than our house on Kensington," he said.

Buddy says if his mom and dad were still here, they would be bursting with pride on this day.

Back in August of last year, the store closed. The renovation that was supposed to take about five months, actually took 15 months.

"It was a long wait, but it turned out better than I expected," Broome said.

Broome told WLOX News that he realized a long time ago he could not compete with the big-box stores and their massive amounts of inventory.

The new Broome's has a very clean and sleek look to it. A lot has changed, but one thing has not changed one bit, and Broome says it never will.

It's that personal, one-on-one service from a family and employees, who really do care.

"The main thing is we will continue to be friendly with all our customers."

"Also, if there is something they can't find anywhere else, they can come here and ask us and we will do our best to get it for them."

Broome's will be open Monday through Saturday. He said that right now plans call for the store to be closed on Sunday, but that could change.
