Sheriff: Son shot father, then himself

VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) -

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd has released the names of the father and son involved in a shooting in Vancleave on Thursday.

Officials said Daun Burns, 39, was shot in the upper chest by his son Phierre Moore, 22, who then turned the gun on himself.

"[Officials] found the shooter in there lying on the floor and also found the victim, his father, laying out in the front yard," said Sheriff Mike Byrd.

Sheriff Byrd said the shooting started in the front yard of this house on Fox Bridge Drive.

"A son went to his father's house, evidently got into an argument with him, took a 12 gauge shot gun and shot his father in the upper chest and then went inside," said Sheriff Byrd.

That's when Sheriff Byrd said Moore turned the gun on himself.

Burns didn't survive the wound to his upper chest and died in the front yard. Moore was air-lifted to a hospital and is critical condition.

It was an argument authorities believe stemmed from an ongoing conflict.

"According to the step mother, she said, they had trouble in the past," said Sheriff Byrd.

Moore remains in critical condition at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, AL. He was initially airlifted to Ocean Springs Hospital, but was later transported to USA.

Authorities say right now there are a lot of unanswered questions. They will continue to investigate, hoping to find answers as to what caused a Vancleave man to kill his father and attempt to take his own life.

14 years as part of the Ole Miss football program as a coach or player has prepared Matt Luke for this opportunity. Admittedly it doesn't come under the circumstances he might've envisioned. But with a Rebel bloodline that runs 3 generations deep, the position fulfills a lifelong dream. "I can truly tell y'all today that this is my dream job," Luke said Monday at his first press conference as Ole Miss interim head coach. "It's a job that I've been preparing my whole li...

The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
