NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A man with a history of criminal violence has been arrested after he allegedly held a woman against her will at their Nashville apartment.

Police said the woman was assaulted multiple times while she was kept at the home in the 900 block of Blank Street.

The woman managed to escape Wednesday about noon and called for help.

When police went to the residence to talk to the suspect, he did not want to go at first and kept police outside for several hours before eventually coming outside.

A handgun was recovered from inside the apartment, police said.

The suspect, Kenneth Blackwell, is charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

Police said there is no prior reported domestic violence involving the two, but Blackwell was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault and strangulation against another woman in September 2012.

He also has prior convictions for unlawful weapon possession, assault and cocaine possession, police said.
