Temps dropping this afternoon; freeze warning tonight

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It's mid-afternoon, and temperatures are starting to drop in the Jackson area. Temps were in the mid 50s around lunch time, but have dropped about five degrees. By sunset the temperatures will be in the mid 40s heading for an overnight low in the upper 20s.

The first Arctic blast of the season has arrived. The front moved across the state Tuesday morning, clearing South Mississippi by Tuesday afternoon. Clouds increased just behind the front along the leading edge of the shallow, cold, arctic air-mass that will spread south throughout the day.

The wind kicked in between 15 and 30 mph this morning, blowing the cold air all the way to the Gulf Coast. Our high for today occurred before noon, in the low-middle 50s.

Despite a full supply of sunshine, we'll struggle to crack 50 degrees all day Wednesday, along with a cold north breeze.

We'll be in the deep freeze Wednesday and Thursday mornings; upper 20s Wednesday morning, but even colder Thursday with lows into the middle 20s!

A note to those with plants and agricultural interests, the wind should remain strong enough tonight/Wednesday A.M. to prevent significant frost; but clear, and nearly calm conditions will allow widespread frost to form early Thursday.
