Jackson Co. honors veterans with a grand celebration

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - It was a grand celebration Monday in Jackson County for the men and women who have fought on foreign soil to keep us safe. Flag waving families lined the streets of Moss Point to get a good view of the veterans.

"It is important to honor all the veterans especially the ones coming from overseas now that have been in Afghanistan," veteran Cecil Stork said.

Military men and women proudly paraded for miles. Some veterans rode in cars and others on motorcycles waving to the crowd and throwing treats for the kids. Eddie Allen brought his son for the first time to experience the parade.

"I think it is important for the children to learn about the veterans, all of their sacrifices, and what they do for this country," Jackson County resident said Eddie Allen.

Doris Brown couldn't agree more. She works for Mary's Little Lambs and came out with dozens of kids to get a glimpse of history.

"Some of the children's parents are in the military. And we want the children to know there are real heroes in the world, not just superheroes," Brown said.

Many of these local heroes fought for decades on foreign soil, but some didn't make it back home, paying the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

"We have religion, education, and freedom to move about and not having to be afraid. I am very proud of my 30 years of service," said veteran Bethew Jennings said.

Every thank you the veterans received and flag raised in respect makes them feels special on their day.

"It feels great to see everybody turnout and celebrate this day," a veteran said.

"We are blessed," another veteran said.

After the parade, the celebration continued with a special ceremony held at the Jackson County Veterans Memorial Monument in downtown Moss Point.
