How you can help Alliance for Health save lives

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

There is a charitable organization in Hancock County that has helped sustain the lives of hundreds of residents for more than 30 years.

The Alliance for Health has provided free medications to people who find it tough to pay for prescription drugs.

WLOX News takes a closer look at the quietly run program and shows us how you can help keep it going running.

"I was hoping to get some assistance with my medication. I'm a single mom," said Marcie Turnbough as she sits across the desk from an Alliance for Health representative.

Turnbough recently found out she has a medical condition. She said as she works her way through school, making ends meet, on a fixed income, has gotten tough. And there is no extra money for anything.

Turnbough said, "I have fibromyalgia and because of that I'm on several different medications. And it just becomes very expensive."

That's why Turnbough turned to the Alliance for Health for help.

"Do you use a local pharmacy here in town," said the Alliance representative.

Susan Stevens, treasurer of the Alliance for Health told WLOX NEWS, "We don't feel people should have to make a choice between medication and groceries or lights and power electricity. So our goal is to make sure people get the medications they need to stay healthy."

The program was created by Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis more than 30 years ago. Vouchers are given to those who qualify based on need and income. There are four places in Hancock County to apply for assistance.

"Last year we were able to help 124 patients fill approximately 350 prescriptions," said Stevens.

The program operates through donations. And one hundred percent of what's collected goes toward medications. The program has no over-head expenses, according Alliance leaders.

"We raise money through Christ Episcopal Church and on Thursday November 21 we're hosting our 65th Annual Harvest Dinner. This is a feast you can either come and dine in or get a take out meal. Those donations go toward funding the Alliance for Health," explained Stevens.

It's a $10 a meal donation Alliance leaders said will be matched by a program endowment The Captain Madison Matching Fund.

"So your donation, you don't know how many people it might touch, " said Stevens.

Turnbough said the program certainly touched her.

"The Alliance for Health has been a true, true blessing for me. If it was not for them I don't know what I would have done if they had not been there and available to help me,"

It's Important to note, the Alliance For Health does not fill narcotic or psychiatric medications.

For more information about the locations you can apply for help you can contact the Hancock County Human Resource Agency at 228-467-8050.

If you'd like to make a donation or find out more about the Harvest Dinner Fundraiser contact Christ Episcopal Church at 228-467-7757.

Tickets to the dinner can be purchased at the door.  Take-out orders start at 4:00pm Dine-in 6:00pm.

Tickets can also be picked up at Maggie May's on Main St. in Bay St. Louis. Christ Episcopal Church is located at 912 South Beach Boulevard in Bay St. Louis.
