MS veterans inducted into "Wall of Honor"

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some of the Magnolia State's finest military heroes received special recognition Friday.

The G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson inducted six Mississippi veterans into its "Wall of Honor" during its Veterans Day program this morning.

The guest speaker for the ceremony was retired Air Force general and past president of Mississippi State University, Dr. Robert Foglesong.

Also on display, a 32-foot memorial entitled, "The Fallen".

It depicts the names and photos of over 100 Mississippi veterans who died in the war on terror since 2001.

The 2013 class of inductees are:

  • Hilliard Carter - Vietnam: Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, Jackson, MS
  • B.C. Blanks - Vietnam: Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Three Bronze Stars, Pearl, MS
  • Luis Vargas -Vietnam: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Post Commander American Legion 112, Brandon, MS
  • Wayne Burkes - Korea, Vietnam: Retired 4-star General, Elected MS State Senator and Representative, Chairman of MS Veterans Affairs Board, Brandon, MS
  • Moses Hardy - WWI: Recipient of French Croix de Guerre, Guinness Book of World Record holder (oldest Living Human), Aberdeen, MS
  • Jesse Brown - Korea: Killed in Action in Korea, Distinguished Flying Medal, Purple Heart, 1st Black Aviator in Navy history, Hattiesburg, MS
