Security boosted at St. Martin amid threat rumors

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - Extra security is in place today at St. Martin High School after rumors spread that some students were going to bring guns to school.

WLOX News contacted the Jackson County Sheriff's Department after a WLOX viewer alerted us to the concern. Dispatchers tell us they've been answering calls about this since Tuesday night.

We've learned extra security measures have been used since Wednesday morning at the high school. But thankfully, there haven't been any incidents with weapons there this week.

Faculty members have been instructed to read the following statement to any concerned parents who call the school:

"We are aware of the rumors and have taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well being of all our students. Our Security Resource Officer and additional law enforcement officers are on campus today. We have added extra personnel to all duty positions around the school. SMHS doors are secured and monitored, as they are every day. In addition, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department has been notified."

There's no word on how the rumors started, or if there was any evidence of a specific threat.
