Police make second arrest in connection with murdered family

JACKSON, MS (AP/WLBT) - A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the murders of a Brandon family.

Cedric D. Mason of Jackson has been arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder and two counts of kidnapping. Mason was arrested by the MHP swat team around 9:30 Wednesday night. He was taken to the University Medical Center for observation.

Meantime, Timothy Burns was the first person arrested in this case. Burns is being held without bond. He is charged with arson and two counts of murder.

Both men are accused of killing Atira Smith, Jaidon Hill and Laterry Smith. Their bodies were found in an abandoned house in Copiah County.

Laterry Smith was murdered in Hinds County. So, district attorneys from both Hinds and Copiah County will work together on the prosecutions.

The motive behind the murders and Burns' and Mason's connection with the victims remain unclear.
