Lady Tigers picked to finish third in SEC by league coaches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southeastern Conference unveiled its 10th annual women's basketball preseason All-SEC teams and a predicted order of finish as the LSU women's basketball team was selected third in a voting of the league's coaches.

The Lady Tigers received 134 votes, while defending league champion Tennessee was picked to win it again with 167 votes. Kentucky was second with 159 votes. LSU, which finished sixth last season in the SEC, was also picked third in the media poll last month.

Senior forward Theresa Plaisance, a 2014 National Player of the Year candidate, garnered three votes for SEC Preseason Player of the Year and was named to the All-SEC first team. Tennessee's Meighan Simmons was selected as the Player of the Year with seven votes.

Sophomore guard Danielle Ballard earned second-team All-SEC honors. Ballard ranked second among all SEC freshmen in scoring last season, and she led the league in steals after recording an LSU single-season record 100.

Points were compiled on a 13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for order of prediction, while each player received two points for a first-team vote and one point for a second-team vote. Coaches do not vote for their own team or players.

The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll, their highest preseason ranking since starting the 2009-10 season No. 9. LSU hosts Stephen F. Austin in the Sue Gunter Classic and opening round of the preseason WNIT at 7 p.m. Friday in the Maravich Center.
