Scammers look to Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There's a new warning for those hoping to win the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. In this case, you don't want to be checking your mailbox.

Abdulla Rahsingeda says it was a dream that almost turned into a nightmare.

"You don't send money to get money when you've won something," he said.

The Nashville man received a large set of letters telling him he won. The letters are often accompanied by a phone call afterward looking to collect payment.

The problem? That's not how the sweepstakes works.

"All of these communications are very cleverly marketed and designed to make you think it's the real thing, using Publishers Clearing House's name, using their website and even spoofing their phone number in the direct mail," said Kathleen Calligan, with the Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee.

Publishers Clearing House will never call a prize winner nor require a payment for a prize.

"I'm furious as to how these scammers can get away with this," Rahsingeda said. "There should be a law where people can take these folks into a court."

The BBB said if it's too good to be true, it is. And the Publishers Clearing House has a fraud hotline. If you receive a suspicious piece of mail or a phone call, just call them directly at 1-800-392-4192.
