BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The East Baton Rouge school teacher accused of hitting a handicapped student was arrested, but the child's mother is worried the punishment won't stick.

Nerelyn Soreta bonded out of Parish Prison Tuesday. She turned herself in to authorities Monday after a warrant was issued for her arrest. Her bond was set at $10,000.

Cellphone video allegedly shows her slapping a special needs child at Jefferson Terrace Elementary school last week.

Soreta is charged with simple battery of the infirm. The child's mother says that is not enough.

"Because they can't speak then it's like anything is fair game. And if I do do something, all it is a misdemeanor - simple battery to the infirm. So I can beat them I can do whatever I want. If I do go to jail it's six months, it's a misdemeanor, I can do a program and it will be expunge from my record. Clearly unacceptable," said mother of the victim, Lasundra Lipsey.

The mother says her child will not return to any East Baton Rouge Parish School. Superintendent Dr. Bernard Taylor says the alleged incident is not a reflection of the school.

"Anytime an individual makes a mistake, it's going to be investigated and we're going to follow district policies and procedures in handling the matter, but at the end of the day the general public can rest assured that these children are cared for. People are concerned about them and we're not going to let any harm come to them. And if anything rises to that level we're going to take the appropriate actions as soon as we can," said Taylor.

If convicted, Soreta faces up to six months in jail.
