GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The first thing Gulfport has to do is beat archrival Biloxi on the road. The second thing the Admirals need is a St. Martin victory over D'Iberville. If that happens, Gulfport would claim back-to-back Region 4-6A titles.
Both the Warriors and Admirals share the top spot in the Region 4-6A standings at 6 wins and 1 loss. D'Iberville holds the tie breaker thanks to a regular season win over Gulfport on October 25th.
Admirals head coach Eddie Pierce relies on quarterback Thad Miller to let the ball fly. The Floyd Brothers, Jevon and Richaud lead the way. Senior Jevon Floyd has hauled in 53 passes and 9 touchdowns. Richaud, a junior, has 63 receptions and a team leading 10 touchdowns.
Miller has another weapon besides the Floyd's.. in Jonathan Nance. The junior receiver has snagged 27 passes and 6 touchdowns and a team leading 17.6 yards per catch average.
Head coach Eddie Pierce said,"He's gotten better each game. He's a tall receiver. He catches the ball well and he does a number of things for us and has become our punter too. He's a good athlete."
"I run good routes," state Nance. He added,"Catch the ball and make sure Thad Miller is never in doubt that we're going to catch the ball and make plays for him."
Gulfport quarterback Thad Miller has piled up 23-hundred 78 yards passes, 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He says Nance helps pump up the Admirals passing game.
"Jon Jon is a great receiver. He's an outstanding route runner and gets open a lot. He catches the ball using good speed and he's makes big plays for us."
Nance and the two Floyd Brothers give Gulfport one of the best receiving trio in the state if not the best and they'll present problems for Biloxi Friday night.
The Gulfport-Biloxi clash will be one of six featured games on the Friday Night Football Showdown beginning 10:35 on WLOX-ABC.
The Class 4A State playoffs get underway. Region 8-4A regular season champion St. Stanislaus will entertain North Pike. Runner-up Vancleave also has the home field advantage Friday night hosting McComb. Poplarville travels to Purvis and Moss Point at Columbia.
