WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - The Hancock County School District confirms one of their school buses carrying students from South Hancock County Elementary School was involved in an accident shortly after school let out Monday afternoon.
According to Hancock County School District Assistant Superintendent Donnie Gholston, the accident happened around 2:50 p.m. on Hancock Drive at the intersection of Sunflower Street in Waveland.
Gholston said the bus driver backed into a vehicle behind the bus. Forty-six children were on board the bus during the accident.
"There were no students or adults transported to the hospital. The bus driver backed into a vehicle. The people in that vehicle were okay," Gholston said.
"Because it took quite some time for authorities to investigate the scene, eight to 10 of the children were picked up by their parents at the scene. The rest were taken home on that bus."
Gholston said the area where the accident occurred is heavily populated and the route isn't very long.
"We always put safety first and review our bus policies with our drivers," Gholston said.
No word on whether either of the vehicles sustained any damage.
