SC State Cruises Over Savannah State, 45-9

SAVANNAH, GA -

The South Carolina State defense put on a dominating performance limiting the Savannah State Tigers offense to -12 yards rushing on to a ,45-9,routing Saturday at Ted Wright Stadium.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-3 overall, 4-1 MEAC, while the Tigers fall to 1-9 overall, 0-6 in the league.

"It feels great to win after the kind of week we had last week", said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. "Our kids approached the game in a business like way."

The Bulldog offense played phemeonal racking up 438 yards total offense with 275 yards on the ground and 163 passing.

Redshirt senior quarterback Richard Cue had record setting day throwing for 15-of-25 for 163 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for a season-high 17 carries for 128 yards on the day. He tied the record for Touchdown Passes in game previously held by Marvin Marshall (1994), Reese McCampbell (2000 & 2003) and Malcolm Long (2009).

"Cue ran the ball well and recognized some changes in where the re-zoning of the defense were and he took advantage of it, while throwing the ball pretty well," said Pough.

Redshirt freshman running back Justin Taylor became the second running back to reach the 100-yard mark the season. Taylor finished with a 28 rushes for 127 yards in the victory.

Senior Tyler McDonald reached another milestone in an illustrious final collegiate campaign. Last week he became the school's All-Time Career Reception Leader and today finishing with three catches for 84-yards and a touchdown, McDonald broke the All-Time Career Yardage record with 2,166 previously held by Oliver (Tre') Young (2006-09) of 2,156.

"It feels good but more importantly, it's good to get back on the winning track after last week, said McDonald. "It's good to get the bitter taste out our mouth."

SC State jumped on quick to a 14-9 lead on touchdown passes from Cue to McDonald (34-yards) and seniorCaleb Davis for 14-yards at the 7:16 mark in the second quarter. Cue's 32-yard scamper closed out the first-half with the Bulldogs ahead 21-9.

The second-half belonged to Bulldogs with Cue connecting on pair of back-to-back touchdown passes of 4 and 3-yards to redshirt sophomore Temmarrick Hemingway to give SC State a commanding 35-9 lead with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Senior kicker/punter Nick Belcher's 23-yard field goal followed by a 2-yard punch by Cue sealed the 45-9 victory for the Bulldogs.

Pough stated, "I congratulate our players and coaches on the win and now we have to move on to the next stage."

"We have been on the road for about a month, so it will be great to be back home in front of our fans. I think we have a good chance (playoffs) but we just need to do what we need to do and give ourselves good statistical evidence."

Senior linebacker Joe Thomas spearheaded the Bulldog defense with 8 tackles, 1.5 sacks for 8-yards, and 1.5 TFL. Sophomore Tevin Richard in his first start at the linebacker position this season had a solid performance with 5 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 TFL.

The Bulldogs will return to action on next week when they host the visiting Rattlers of Florida A&M on in a pivotal MEAC showdown. SC State will be celebrating "Homecoming 2013" along with "Senior Day" Kick-off is 1:30 p.m.
