PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There was lots of fun and entertainment Saturday afternoon as crowds turn out for the annual Red Beans and Rice Celebration.

Bands performed for the benefit festival at Trustmark Park. Families and kids enjoyed a day of great weather and sampling some of the best red beans and rice the south has to offer.

There were more children's activities this year including a hula hoop contest.

There was fun for the kids, animal exhibits, bands, a magic show just to name a few.

Organizers said more than 1,200 people attended this year's event.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to Stewpot Community Services, which last year provided more than 160,000 meals to the less fortunate in the Jackson area.

"Stewpot has had some tough years and this is something that stewpot has weathered then very well and they provide such a valuable service to the community and this is one of their best and biggest events," Red Beans & Rice Planning Committee Chairman Barber Boone.

WLBT'S own Howard Ballou served as one of this year's judges.
