Another candlelight prayer vigil set for Dawson mayor

DAWSON, GA (WALB) -

A second prayer vigil is scheduled for tonight at 6:00 at the Dawson City Hall for Mayor Christopher Wright, who is hospitalized after being shot multiple times last week.

This vigil follows the one held on Saturday night, when friends and family gathered for a candle light vigil for  Mayor Wright  at the Terrell County Courthouse.

The city is still coming to terms with what they call a bizarre incident. "Everyone is fine. In times like this, family come together. Everybody come in. They show love. Look at the posters, the candles," said his uncle, Wallace Johnson.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Christopher Wright was returning to his home on Crawford Street where family members said his mother was tied up inside. Once inside the home, Wright was shot multiple times and had to undergo several surgeries.

"We miss him already and we love him. We want him to get better. We care for him were behind our mayor," said Johnson.

A close friend of Wright's says he was like a son to him. Commissioner Ernest Johnson believes the mayor was targeted.

"I pray for the people that's involved. I ask everyone to first pray for him. For him to be able to get over this," said Commissioner Ernest Johnson.

More than 100 people prayed for Mayor Wright's recovery and say now is the time for everyone in the city to come together, regardless of personal beliefs about the mayor.

"Through God again, we're going to be able to pull together and make this thing work out. I think the mayor will be much stronger behind this," said Commissioner Ernest Johnson.

And those who worked closely with him says his job as mayor is far from finished. "He's a great leader. He was trying to get some things going and moving in the City of Dawson. We just want to make sure that justice is done," said Carlotta Harrell, of the Georgia Conference of Black Mayors.

Wright's mother was in attendance as well as representatives with the Terrell County NAACP. The family says they appreciate all the love and support received for him.

Initial reports were that Christopher Wright was in critical condition. The family has prohibited the hospital from commenting on his condition at this time. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is still conducting their investigation.
