Police arrest man in Surfside Beach for striking victim with hammer

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Surfside Beach Police arrested a 56-year-old Myrtle Beach man after he allegedly struck a victim in the face multiple times with a hammer.

SBPD officers responded to the report of an assault at Surfside Freddie's on Highway 17 South at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from SBPD Chief Rodney Keziah.

Officers learned what happened, and witnesses gave a description of the suspect, later identified as Gary H. Pew. He had already fled the scene, Chief Keziah stated. Pew later surrendered to officers without further incident.

The victim was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Pew has been charged with first-degree assault and battery, and he currently being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bond.
