Mail fraud sends Biloxi man to jail for 16 months

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Another South Mississippian will go to jail in the aftermath of the BP oil spill.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney's office says Thanh Van Nguyen was sentenced in federal court to 16 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.  The Biloxi man was accused of mail fraud in connection with the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  Nguyen was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $171,577.92 and perform 100 hours of community service.

Nguyen admitted that he carried out a scheme to defraud the BP Gulf Coast Claims Facility by making a false claim for damages, alleging that he lost earnings and profits from his Ocean Springs business, TN Dollar Partnership, as a result of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill when, in fact, the business was closed and not operational at the time of the oil spill.
