2 men killed in boat crash identified

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources has released the names of men died in a boating accident Thursday off of Noble View Road on Skidaway Island.

Randy Boatright and Billy Hugh Carter were killed when the 17-foot Carolina skiff they were on hit a dock walkway on early Thursday morning, according to the DNR.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept. detectives and other agencies responded. Investigators are waiting for the tide to come in to be able to dock the boat and get the bodies off of the boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard first got reports that two men had gone missing after leaving for a fishing trip Wednesday night on a vessel. Police later spotted the boat from a helicopter.

"The Coast Guard was looking for a boat with two men in it that had gone out, I think, on a fishing trip last night and had been unable to find them. The metro helicopter was able to find them. The boat had floated up into a marsh. Apparently, it had hit a dock. It least that's the way it appears. The two men were in the boat - both deceased - and we're in the process now of the investigation to back all that up," Julian Miller, SCMPD's public affairs administrator, told WTOC.

The DNR is leading the investigation.
