Coastal Empire Fair opens

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Coastal Empire Fair opened Thursday to costumed families swarming the Midway for cotton candy, funnel cakes, games and of course the rides.

A year ago eight people were shot on the Midway, but with beefed up security, including metal detectors at the entrances, fair goers are feeling much safer.

Natasha Love, a fairgoer, said, "We're not worried about what happened last year, so we just come out to have a good time."

Maj. James Barnwell of the SCMPD agreed.

"We have 14 officers here on the midway, and what you'll see throughout the fair is an abundance of increased police presence."
