Officers aim to protect trick-or-treaters from sex offenders

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

While the hunt is on for the best candy in town, Richmond County deputies are going door-to-door, making sure sex offenders aren't doing anything to attract trick-or-treaters to their door.

"Any probationers with sex offenses have been instructed to stay in their homes and not to participate in any Halloween functions, they are to turn off their lights," said Pamela Gould, the Chief Probation Officer for the Augusta's Judicial Circuit.

She says with thousands of children trying to stock up on candy Halloween makes for a long night of house calls for dozens of officers trying to keep tabs on hundreds of sex offenders.

"We have approximately 415 registered sex offenders for Richmond County and in our office we supervise over 200 sex offenders," Gould, said.

That means the other 200 registered sex offenders in Augusta who aren't under supervision anymore aren't being monitored or being told to avoid Halloween activities.

That's why Gould says it's important to do your homework and know your community before heading out for holiday fun.

"The most important thing is to go out with your children and know where your children are going, know the residences and who lives there and be very mindful of your surroundings," she said.
