Celebration at UMass gets rowdy

Shortly after the Red Sox won the World Series Wednesday, the party started at UMass in Amherst.

CBS 3 Springfield's Bill Rapp said the celebration started peacefully but took a rowdy turn.

UMass hasn't confirmed any students have been arrested, but witnesses have reported seeing students being taken away by officers.

There have been reports of students lighting objects like sweatshirts on fire and throwing them into the crowd.

Police have used tear gas, riot shields, loud sounds and other crowd-dispersing techniques on hundreds of students who gathered after the game.

Witnesses say there are dozens of police officers on campus. Police are also using dogs and mounted officers for crowd control.

The school has been using its official Twitter account to try to get students to celebrate safely.

Shortly after the Red Sox won, the school tweeted, "Your actions tonight have consequences. If you engage in reckless crowd behavior, you can be arrested. #umass."

@UmassAmherst then tweeted around 11:45 p.m., "Breaking trees and engaging in other destructive behavior will get you arrested. Think before you jeopardize your future. Show #UMassPride."

The school hoped prevent any form of riot after the game by offering free food and a big screen to watch Game 6 of the World Series.

Police said earlier this week they hoped to have a "hands off" approach this year unless the celebration got out of hand.

UMass has had a history of riots after New England sports championship games.
