More residents are going green, thanks to blue containers

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Residents in Wilmington are going green, thanks to some blue carts.

More than 80% of city trash customers in Wilmington now recycle, according to the City of Wilmington.

Nearly a year ago, the city introduced new blue recycling carts for residents who wanted to take part in the voluntary recycling program.

Before the program, fewer than half of all city trash customers recycled, but now more than 80% of customers are taking part in the program.

City trash customers began receiving the new blue recycling carts in Nov. 2012 and the bi-weekly recycling schedule began in Jan. 2013, saving the city approximately $220,000 each year.

More information is available at wilmingtonnc.gov/recycling.
