Now hiring signs up at Airbus in Mobile

MOBILE, AL (WLOX) -

At the Brookley Aerospace Complex in Mobile, roads are being built that will lead to the new Airbus plant, which is also going up quickly.

A few blocks away, the first 10 assembly line hires gather to chat. Some are leaving Mississippi for a brighter future across the state line. One of them is Robert Kincaid.

"I worked for a smaller company building aircraft and it's a little tight sometimes. So Airbus has a great background and great sales and I think it offers a great opportunity to move forward," Kincaid said.

"Opportunity" is a word you hear a lot from the men and women in the blue Airbus shirts. Jud Newman is also from Mississippi.

"Applying for Airbus was a great opportunity. It's a chance for career development. It's an outstanding company and it's got a great future," Newman explained.

Airbus officials have promised to hire from the region, and so far, they are pleased with the results. Jennifer Ogle is the director of human resources for the company.

"We had a huge amount of people apply for these jobs, and the amount of skills and experience they're bringing blew us away," Ogle said.

For all of the new hires, training begins immediately. That includes about two months at the facility in Mobile, followed by nine months in Hamburg, Germany, the headquarters of Airbus. That's a challenge they're all looking forward to.

Linda Taylor-Bethea has just hired on. "It's going to be a good challenge working with our counterparts in Germany, but it's also going to be a good opportunity to bring a lot of skills back, what we learn from Airbus and all the history to make our line even better and continuously improve it," she said.

Production should begin at the plant in Mobile by the summer of 2015, with the first jets rolling off the assembly line a year later. At peak production, about 50 jets a year, more than 1,000 people will be needed to man the facility.
