Investigators say suspects may be tied to several robberies

SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) -

A half-dozen Effingham County dollar stores and gas stations have been hit in what's being described as a robbery spree.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office has one man in custody. Investigators haven't identified or said whether they've identified additional suspects.

The latest robbery happened at about 10:30 Monday night at the Dollar General near the Effingham-Chatham County line. Deputies say masked men walked into the store with guns, forced two clerks into a bathroom, locked the door then made off with one of the clerk's Ford Mustang.

That car was found Tuesday in West Savannah.

Investigators believe the same men involved in the Dollar General robbery were also responsible for robberies in Springfield and Guyton.

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says that in one recent crime, one robber suggested to another that they "start killing people".

"These victims are just traumatized," McDuffie said. "No. 1, by getting a gun stuck in their face. And then, they hear somebody wants to shoot somebody. They're the only ones around."

The sheriff's office is investigating the crimes with Rincon and Springfield police. The FBI has joined the investigation.
