Judge tours Arbor Cottages to see renovations

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A Chatham County judge has scheduled a meeting in one month to see if the Arbor Cottages are safe enough to live in.

Tuesday, Judge Claire Cornwell Williams toured the cottages on Ogeechee Road to see how much progress the landlord has made since being forced to evict more than a dozen people.

The judge has scheduled a meeting for the beginning of December, giving the landlord one more month to finish up renovations on seven units.

Tuesday, six more units passed inspection. Inspectors say the old electrical wiring posed a fire hazard and was a safety issue.

Steve Varnadoe, the landlord, says he was pleased with the judge's reaction and believes he can be in total compliance by the next meeting.

"I was estatic with the judge's visit," said Varnadoe. "She was like, 'Everything's, good everything's good.'"

The building inspection administrator tells WTOC that once the wiring is fixed in all of the units the only other things that needs to be checked are the heating and cooling units and some other property maintainance issues.
