Americus runner qualifies for Boston Marathon for a second time

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Charlene Pennymon is a mortgage lender by day, but she finds time to run at least five miles each evening.

She proudly displays her medals in her office, but her favorite mementos include those from the April Boston marathon.

Pennymon started out running 5ks, and eventually ran the Albany half marathon, and then qualified for Boston.

"I've just been hooked ever since I think it took me a long time to realize I was using the 5ks as kind of like my warm up for distance running because you kind of have some different gears that kick in as you do the long distance running. Its so therapeutic and before you know it 26.2 miles," says Charlene Pennymon.

Unfortunately that day turned into a tragedy when two bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring more than 250.

Pennymon had just crossed the finish line when the bombs went off.

"We were told to just keep going forward and go to your hotels, and so we were never able to see till we got back to the hotel and was watching on the news," she says.

She says the next day everything was locked down with heavy security

"Police officers and patrols were out in droves, and you knew it was on high alert because all you could see was green jackets and police standing on the streets with these big guns, AK 47 military type guns."

But she won't let all of that stop her from racing.

"We can't be afraid. We can't live in fear, You have to go and do what you want to do and you just have to trust and be observant and you can't let the bad people win, that's how they win by making us afraid to do the things we want, to walk around and be free and do what we want to do," says Pennymon.

The 2014 Boston Marathon race will be open to nine thousand more runners.
