Two Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept. officers helped rescue a fawn that had run into a fence on Tuesday morning.

The officers responded to a call of an injured animal at the Magnolia Memorial Gardens cemetery at 5530 Silk Hope Rd., and the caretaker told them that a fawn had run into the fence there, according to police.

The officers took the deer that was lying on the ground to the Animal Hospital at Rice Hope on GA Highway 21 in Port Wentworth. Officer John Steed, who just graduated from the SCMPD Patrol School on Oct. 17, was one of the officers who helped the animal

Veterinarians gave the fawn an IV and are holding it for overnight observation.

"This incident shows me the human side of the work that we do.  This was a young deer and we wanted to give it a chance to grow up. We were able to help, so we did," Steed said in a statement.
