ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A typical morning for a teen right after the alarm goes off is to pick up their phone and hop online. With new posts popping up every minute, its enough to keep anyone occupied, but when they're spending more time staring at bright screen than what's going on in the next room, it could be considered more than just a distraction...possibly an addiction.

"Kids crave to be in community, they crave to be around others. This is kind of the artificial way for them to do that," Aspire child and adolescent coordinator Lisa Spears said.

She says addiction can take many forms and looking for the signs early on can avoid having your child in a dangerous situation.

"You have to be really careful that they might be trying to replay live connections with people with that addiction fix with social media," Spears said.

If they seem withdrawn or to hide their phone or computer, Spears says it's an indicator that there might be a problem. As a parent, Spears believes its important to have open communication and to have access to your child's accounts, when it comes to her 12-year-old daughter she says its what keeps them close.

"And we use it to kind of play around with each other. I don't do it in a domineering way but to let her know first and foremost that her safety and protection is my number one job as a parent," Spears shares.

She says kids want their parents to be get involved because it shows them that they care and that moderation is a way to stick to boundaries placed.
