Toys for Tots kicks off under new management

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Toys for Tots is going on as planned, even though the Marine Corps Reserve will not handle the collection or distribution here in Jackson.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba joined members of the Marine Corps League Monday to kick off the annual event. The League is much like the American Legion, made up of former and retired Marines.

They say there's no longer a Marine Corps Reserve in Central Mississippi, and it's not due to sequestration. They say it's due to streamlining the program.

The League plans to reach more children than ever this year, with 900 collection boxes set up at retail stores from Yazoo to Pike County. They also urge us to donate for older children.

"We have plenty for the younger children," said Senior Vice Commandant Billy Henderson. "We're going up to 13 years old this year, for older children 10-13, that's probably the toys we're going to need to concentrate on (the most)."

The first day to register is this Saturday, November 2. Head to the Metrocenter Mall from 8am to noon. Bring your photo ID, Social Security cards for all adults and children, proof of income and proof of expenses.
