JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The story just didn't add up after exclusive Skycopter video showed the scene clearly Tuesday afternoon. Jackson police say an unidentified woman stopped an officer to say two people in a silver Dodge van shot at her, inside her vehicle.

A JPD officer spotted the van going at a high rate of speed before it crashed on Raymond Road, at the intersection of Gore Road. A pick-up involved in the crash doesn't appear to be involved in the prior shooting.

WLBT was first told Deeia Williams, 24, and Remar Blocker, 25, were charged with shooting in the city, a misdemeanor. We asked Jackson Police why a lesser charge was given to two people accused of shooting at someone.

"I believe this is an example of an incorrectly coded report," said Jackson Assistant Police Chief Lee Vance. "So again, this is being forwarded to our major investigations unit to be investigated as a felony."

The paperwork mistake was noticed Thursday. Vance says the report about the incident is clear, even a weapon was recovered.

"These situations, especially as it relates the felonies, they are being sent to our crime analysis unit. Our crime analysis unit will look at them and make sure that the proper charge is attached to them and then we proceed with the investigations from there," explained Vance.

He said the public and media are given preliminary information, which can change as the investigation progresses.

"Just because a charge is made originally does not mean that it is going to remain as such. Sometimes they are upgraded, sometimes they are downgraded," explained Vance.

Four days earlier, on Friday, October 18th, two cars were firing at each other on Newman Avenue and an innocent bystander was hit. Vance says it's a disturbing trend.

"There are some people that we have in our community, just like other communities, that have decided that their life long calling is to be a criminal and to fire weapons where innocent people can be shot, but that's their responsibility," said Vance. "It's up to us to hold them accountable for the lack of responsibility and that's what we intend to do."

Jackson police have investigated more than 200,000 cases this year. Vance says mistakes such as this one are rare.
