GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The State Port at Gulfport is considering plans for "going green."
The Mississippi State Port Authority Board of Commissioners held its monthly meeting Thursday morning. Executive Director Jonathan Daniels told the board about an environmental initiative called "Green Marine." That group has a program to certify ports that meet certain environmentally friendly guidelines.
Director Daniels said Gulfport is already heading in that direction.
"A lot of what we're already doing with our diesel emission reduction program, moving from primarily diesel powered mobile harbor cranes, moving to the electric gantry cranes. Some of the other initiatives we have going on on the port site put us a long way in gaining that certification," Daniels said.
According to Daniels, the Port of Seattle is currently the only facility going through the green certification program. He'd like Gulfport to be the first green certified port on the Gulf of Mexico.
