Mississippi baby born with HIV still in remission

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A child born HIV-positive in Mississippi continues to do well and without any sign of the virus in her system.

When she was born to an HIV-positive mother in 2010, her pediatric specialist, Dr. Hannah Gay at Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson decided to treat the newborn aggressively right away with three HIV drugs. Even after going off her anti-retroviral medication, the baby was deemed "functionally cured."

She remains in remission 18 months later.

This case study is detailed by doctors at Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
