PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

A 12-year ban on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird has been lifted by the Plaquemines Parish School Board.

The controversy resurfaced earlier this month after teachers were discovered reading the book to students. Officials originally banned the book in 2001 citing concerns about offensive language and adult themes.

The ACLU and parents were shocked to find out the ban was still in place.

"It's been there for quite some time, never should have been implemented in the first place. And obviously the teachers didn't agree with it and they've been teaching the book anyway," said Marjorie Esman, Executive Director, ACLU of Louisiana.

"There's the Internet. So if kids want to know something they can easily access the Internet and Google it," said Areclia Mitchell, parent.

School officials say they'll be reviewing their current policies and offering other recommendations to the school board next month.

Plaquemines Parish is just south of New Orleans.
