Young armed robbers target Latino victims

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Three separate armed robberies this weekend are believed to be connected. The victims are all Hispanic. According to police, the suspects are a group of young black males armed with an assault rifle

Immigrant rights advocates say authorities need to do more to protect their targets, members of the Latino community. All three armed robberies occurred in just over an hour.

The first happened around 2:40 a.m. in the 1800 block of Shady Lane where the Latino victims told police they were sitting outside the home when five to six black males approached with guns, one carrying an SKS rifle.

They took their cash and cell phones. Two thieves were described as 14 to 15 years old. The group's second stop was in the 1800 block of Westover Drive where a man was robbed of his wallet and cell phone.

Shots were fired striking the home as the victim ran away. Around 3:30 a.m. two others, one in an SUV with three small children and another in a white pickup, were robbed in the 3700 block of Jayne Avenue.

A woman told investigators that one of the suspects jumped on the roof and hood of the SUV with an assault rifle. The suspects opened fire on one person who ran.

"In at least two of these cases they've robbed additional victims who were inside of the house, and they kicked in the door....Somebody knows who these people are and what we're doing is asking the community or someone in the community to come forward," said J.P.D. Assistant Chief Lee Vance.

Officials with MIRA or the Mississippi Immigration Rights Alliance say the Latino population is vulnerable to crime and doesn't often report their attacks because of the language barrier.

"I think more Spanish speaking people that we have in law enforcement the more helpful it's gonna be to reach out to the Latino communities about crimes that are committed against them. One of the commitments our new mayor has made is to change that," said MIRA Executive Director Bill Chandler.

Victims in each incident told police the robbers were traveling in a gray or black Dodge Charger. Please call Crimestoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477) or the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234.
