GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Construction workers have been hammering away at an expansion project at George Regional Hospital that will add 21,000 square feet to the hospital.
"We are very excited about this expansion project, not only for the services we are going to be able to provide for the residents and our patients here, but also this expansion will be creating jobs for the community," George Regional Hospital Director of Support Services Deryk Parker said.
The $2.3 million expansion is designed to make residents feel like they are at home, not at a hospital. Inside will be new rooms for the acute care unit and The Health and Rehab Center, which offers services similar to a nursing home.
"Maybe someone who had a stroke and needs some type of therapy there, or also somebody who had a knee or hip replacement may be here for four to six weeks. So it's just vital for the community to have these types of services here so they can stay close to home," Parker said.
Right now, there are only 19 rooms for The Health and Rehab Center patients and about half of those call the center home.
"Our ultimate goal is to send them back to home or community life. We want that for them, we strive for that," Health and Rehab Center Administrator Joy Turner said. "Of course, those that are here long term they are our families."
The new addition will offer residents the option for a private room and bath. There will also be a new spacious therapy room and a dinning activity room.
"The residents are really excited," Turner said. "The ones we have here have been peeking out their windows, watching the construction, making sure the construction workers are doing what they are supposed to do. We get a report daily.
The front part of the building for The Health and Rehab Center is expected to be complete by February.
