JPD violent crime solving tops national rate

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The state's largest city has more than it's share of crime, but officials say homicides are down, and crimes are being solved.

Jackson Police Department Assistant Chief Lee Vance said law enforcement in the Capital City makes arrests and get criminals off the streets at higher rate than the national average.

He credits patrol officers, investigators and detectives for their ability to find suspects and charge them with their offenses.

According to Vance, crime is down 30% since last year.

"Our clearance rate is up around 80%. The national average is somewhere around 50%. So our people are doing an excellent job of solving any case especially one that involves a murder," said Asst. Chief Vance.

There have been 42 homicides so far this year. Fifty eight murders were reported in 2012.
